SImple question - would an ‘08 G35 with 90k miles be worth considering as a daily driver? I’m having trouble finding solid reliability info, and just a general sense of how well they hold up over the years.

I’ve been seeing a lot of them for sale lately... all about the same year, all with less than 100k on the clock, all for super cheap...
Tempting, but very suspicious. I wonder if they’re all falling apart or something?

That VQ, etc. engine has historically been very reliable. My wife owned an ‘09 G37 coupe for 4 years and pushed hers up to 70XXX with zero problems. It’s a sample size of one but that’s all I got.

A friend of mine had one about that vintage he drove to the mid hundreds before he sold. I think it held up well overall, but I didn’t have much mechanic-ey contact with it other than helping him replace the headlights. Which, FTR, sucks a lot. He’s an Opponaut, maybe he’ll stop in.

I think it’s that they’re developing a bad image. Y’know, with all the G coupe bros and such.

I wouldn’t be afraid of it as long as it has been maintained. The VQ doesn’t have a bad reputation except for the noise it makes. Personally, I like its growl but most don’t. Anecdotally, the 3.7l in my wife’s G37 has been totally solid.

2008 was the final year, I think it was that strange year where they introduced the G37 but only as a coupe, whereas the G35/G35x continued until it was replaced with the G37 sedan the following model year. Maybe a lot of people moved on for image purposes, as it tends to be with these premium brands.
That 3.5L engine was in everything and seems pretty bulletproof - if it's anything like my friend's Nissan, it's stuff around the powertrain that'll likely break first.

I was an Infiniti tech when this car was new. The only problems I really saw on the new cars was the radio that controls the climate control as well. Fans would get stuck on OFF or Full ON until the radio could be replaced, always under warranty at that time. Not sure if they ever got that problem fixed in the new units we installed.
Other than that I never saw anything very big. I’ve heard about intake leaks on the VQ but again, not a huge/expensive problem.
I had one for a long weekend of training that included a 3 hr drive to Columbus, OH in the winter and it was surprisingly comfortable, decent on gas mileage, and was fun to drive. I think one of the main problems (for enthusiasts) with Infiniti is the same problem that plagues Lexus - The lack of steering feel and refinement. Still great cars though.

My parents have an ‘06 G35 that they bought brand new. It has roughly 95k on the clock now. They haven’t had any issues with the car only drive belts have had to be changed. It does burn some oil, but nothing that should be alarming.

It’s a later VQ so the timing chain issues SHOULD be solved. I know we don’t see them come through our shop as used very often, so I don’t have much first hand experience.

Very reliable, can run through brakes a little bit but I only know that to be true for the coupes, don’t know about the sedans. I’m a fan of them as DD, though.

Yes. But the modifications in this picture are required for ownership.

Well, I’m also looking at a TSX, so steering feel can ONLY be better.
My buddy works at an Infiniti dealer here and has similar praise. Strangely he drives an IS300 SportCross, but whatevs.

I would say the G35/37 has better feel than a TSX does for sure. I think they’re great cars that will last a very long time with minimal problems. Now QX56’s on the other hand... never get near them or they will break.

I’d be looking at how many mods it has. I did a Google Image Search for G35 the other day, every car is modded to shit. I didn’t know they were such a ricer’s car, and I think that sort of thing can negatively impact reliability quite a lot.
